According to my online Norton account and my Norton software I have 21 days left on my Norton subscription. It expires on 24th March 2008. This means that my antivirus software should keep running until the 24th March 2008. Right? Wrong.
Norton has turned off my antivirus software 21 days early and won't turn it back on unless I renew my subscription.
WHAT THE FUCK?

So, what do you recommend I use instead of Norton Internet Security Suite?
(ZoneAlarm is out. Some kinda conflict of something. BSOD ad nauseum.)

Followed the instructions above. Auto-protect is still off. From the error messages I'm getting it looks like Norton won't switch it back on unless I renew my subscription. For your information my subscription expires in 21 days. Today's date 4th March 2008. Subscription expires 24th March 2008.

Tried that again. Still not working. I'm currently downloading avast from www.avast.com and will be using it instead. Your Norton software has been nothing but trouble since the day I installed it. I vow to never use your products again.

AVG free.

http://free.grisoft.com/

In fact, I'd recommend you run GNU/Linux, but failing that, AVG is a reasonable start.

AVG from Grisoft can have real problems in removing viri that are active in memory. Thats why I dumped it and moved to Avast with it's lovely "Oh fuck it and do it in DOS mode"

sign up for the free antivirus there

download. disconnect from internet PHYSICALLY. uninstall Norton shite. uninstall Symantec shite. Double check its all uninstalled. Install Avast. Let it do the boot check. Swear when it finds stuff Norton ignored. Paste in the serial number you got in your sign-up email. Update the Avast Program (also upates latest virus defs). Change settings to automatically update program as well as virus defs, oh and turn off its sounds!

Use Windows Firewall on XP(SP2).

I agree with you! I had a hell of a time to remove it from my parents' laptop, still haven't understood how I managed to succeed in the end.

I would never again touch Norton with a bargepole. They are bastards of the first order. I recently bought new computer with free trial of norton. did its job for a while and when trial ended I uninstalled it. As soon as I did this I was suddenly getting aggressive pop ups from 'antivirus2008' which was telling me there were loads of viruses on my computer and I should purchase this software to cure the problem. There was no way of uninstalling this. I tried everything research on various websites confirmed that this originated from norton but no easy way of getting rid. One of my friends encountered exactly the same problem when he uninstalled Norton so it must originate from Norton. The only way I managed to stop the pop ups was by keying in 'msconfig' in 'run' box and clicking on 'startup' tab and untick av2k8. I have loaded up AVG which is brilliant and free and allows me to uninstall if need be without any problems. The thing that's bugging me is I know 'Antivus 2008' is still on my computer.

Personally I would not touch them with a barge pole. I normally self build my systems. However about 1.
