Amazon removes the Sales Rank from certain books.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] sf_drama of all places.
"Amazon.com has recently decided to derank and remove from searches all books they deem to be "adult". The problem with that is that the only books they seem to be removing are gay and lesbian, no matter what level of sex they have in them. They're even deranking books about rape, feminism and lesbian pregnancies, as well as works of literature like Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain. Despite this, many heterosexual and "vanilla" works have remained ranked and listed, like works by Laurell K Hamilton and bodice ripper romance novels."

Edited to add: An open letter from BookSquare to amazon regarding recent policy changes - says it much better than I can.

A list of affected books
Another list of someone's top 100 gay novels with all the affected books in bold

Amazon have this to say (as posted by Mark Probst): In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude "adult" material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.

They've deranked our national treasure, Stephen Fry :( but only in paperback. PB is tagged as 'gay' but the HB isn't.

I signed the petition "In protest at Amazon.com's new "adult" policy". It's amazon caving to the fundies and making it very difficult to search for gay erotic fiction. In fact if you search for homosexuality the first book that comes up is one for parents. How to prevent you child becoming an abomination unto the Lord! All the other suggested searches are along the lines of homosexuality + bible/christian/truth/faith. I never thought amazon would pander to this lot.
Try looking at the suggested searches that follow "homosexuality . . ." on amazon.co.uk. It's a very different picture.

Amazon.com have missed one book. Crave: Dyke Erotica by Laura Adele-Marsh. It comes up if you do an "All Department" search and it still has a Sales Rank. From what Laura told me it's pretty explicit.
Will posting this in my journal do any good? No. Why am I posting it? Don't ask me difficult questions.

Homeowner sued after woman delivering junk mail claims she injured her hand in letterbox
Junk mail rarely brings you something you want, but for one homeowner it has led to a lawsuit landing on his doormat. Paul O'Brien is being sued by a woman who says she trapped her hand in his letterbox while posting mail. Joy Goodman, a cake decorator in her late 40s, is seeking damages for personal injury and loss of earnings. She claims the top of her right index finger was severed by his letterbox and she can no longer do her intricate job.
Ok, this is from the Daily Mail but WTF?!?

Oh, wait a minute, here's the Telegraph article
. . . the home owner vowed to fight the case. Paul O'Brien, 44, a self-employed engineer from Leeds, said: "When I received a solicitor's letter I thought someone was having a laugh. I actually told them they had sent it early. April Fool's Day is still six weeks away.
"I just cannot believe someone who came on to my property uninvited, to put junk mail through my door that I didn't want, can now sue me because they hurt themselves." . . .

Royal Mail's said that none of their posties have had any trouble with that letter box. They also said something about training their employees to be able to deal with letterboxes correctly. This bitch should be suing her employers for not training her properly.

Royal Mail
That was far too easy, wasn't it? Here's my email to them.
"Despite having opted out of receiving unaddressed junk mail over 4 months ago I'm still receiving it. Today's junk arrived bearing a 'postmark' that said "Delivered By Royal Mail" and the postman was dressed like one of your postmen. This is getting to be beyond a joke. If this is not resolved promptly I shall be contacting Postwatch and Watchdog."

Also is anyone getting calls from 04074780000 with a prerecorded message congratulating you on . . . fuck knows. I started to hang up when I heard the click of the recorded message so I only heard "Congratulations! You have won . . ."
Edit - This bunch of useless goat-felching wankers are claiming you've won an all expenses paid holiday to Florida and would you please press 9 . . . . I found that out after googling the number last night. I forgot to edit this entry properly before posting it a few minutes ago. Sorry about that.

As of this morning 01942720556 can be added to the nuisance call list.

Now to post to [livejournal.com profile] royalmailsucks

Edit 2 - Petition against the huge hike in ebay fees and the new 'improved' feedback system

The Herbal Essences free haircut offer is a fucking waste of time if you live anywhere in Lothian. Our nearest participating 'salon' is in Glasgow and they insist on you agreeing to pay a £30 'no show' fee if you don't turn up. So if Scotrail/citylink fuck up and you don't arrive on time you are royally screwed. They can all rot in hell.

I got banned from commenting in a journal (woohoo!) and the spineless fuck didn't even bother to answer my question* or unfriend me. Fortunately anonymous commenting is allowed but I don't want to get done for circumventing a ban so I'm getting someone else to do it for me. I don't like being friended by complete strangers especially rude ones who don't answer questions and ban me and won't unfriend me.

Useless twat**.

*Question being along the lines of "who are you and why did you friend me?"
